Rainfall Shifts, Warmer Temperatures Forecast for the Greater Horn of Africa

  • Moderate rainfall (50-200mm) is expected over parts of Burundi, and central to southern Tanzania. 
  • Light rainfall (less than 50 mm) is expected over coastal regions of Tanzania, Kenya, the Red Sea region, as well as parts of northern Tanzania and western Rwanda.  
  • Dry conditions are expected in the rest of the region.  

Note: 1 mm of rainfall is equivalent to 1 liter of water per square meter.  

Rainfall Anomalies 

  • More than usual rainfall is expected over central to southern Tanzania and coastal regions of Kenya.  
  • Less than usual rainfall is expected over Tanzania’s eastern and western regions and parts of Rwanda and Burundi.

Exceptional Rainfall 

  • Rainfall exceeding the top 10% on record is expected over parts of central Tanzania.

Temperature 01 – 08 January 2025

  • Moderate to high temperatures (20-32℃) are expected over most parts of South Sudan, Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.  
  • Mild temperature conditions (less than 20℃) are expected over central to northern Sudan, central Ethiopia, northern Somalia, central to western Kenya, and western regions of Rwanda and Burundi.
  •   

Temperature anomalies

  • Warmer than usual temperatures are expected over most parts of the Greater Horn of Africa.  

Heat stress

  • Cautionary heat stress levels are expected over eastern regions of Tanzania and Kenya, southern Somalia, and eastern South Sudan.
