The IGAD Climate Predictions and Applications Center (ICPAC) shared their rainfall Forecast and temperature forecast for the Eastern Africa region, 22–29 April 2025.
The forecasts are essential in rolling out early warnings and early preparedness among the citizens as the predictions enable awareness and, in turn, actions to build resilience among the most vulnerable during extremes.
Moderate rainfall (50–200 mm) is expected across most parts of Rwanda, Burundi, northwestern and southern Tanzania, western Uganda, coastal, northeastern, and western Kenya, as well as parts of western Ethiopia, northern South Sudan, and southern Sudan.
Light rainfall (less than 50 mm) is anticipated over central to southern South Sudan, southern Sudan, western and southern Ethiopia, central to southern Somalia, central Tanzania, central Kenya, and central to eastern Uganda.
Above-normal rainfall is expected over most areas of Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, eastern Kenya, northern South Sudan, and southern Sudan.
Below-normal rainfall is likely over central to southern South Sudan, central to southern Ethiopia, central to southern Somalia, western Kenya, and much of Uganda.
Rainfall exceeding the 90th percentile (top 10% of historical records) is expected in parts of northeastern Kenya and some regions of southern and northern Tanzania.
The forecasted heavy rainfall in these areas may lead to localized flooding. Communities in low-lying regions are advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
Temperature Forecast
High temperatures (above 32°C) are expected in parts of Sudan and the Afar region of Ethiopia.
Moderate to high temperatures (20–32°C) are forecast across most areas of Sudan, South Sudan, Eritrea, northern, western, and eastern Ethiopia, Djibouti, Somalia, Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.
Mild temperature conditions (below 20°C) are expected over most of Burundi, Rwanda, central to western Kenya, and central Ethiopia.
Temperatures are forecast to be warmer than usual in most parts of Eritrea, Djibouti, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Uganda, western Kenya, as well as central and northern Somalia.
Cooler-than-average temperatures are likely over cross-border regions of Sudan, South Sudan, and Ethiopia, and northeastern Kenya.
Elevated heat stress levels are anticipated across most parts of South Sudan, Sudan, eastern Kenya, eastern Tanzania, central to southern Somalia, and the coastal regions of Eritrea.
